International Rugby Experience (IRE) architect Níall McLaughlin has spoken of his delight after the building won the prestigious 2023 Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Public Choice Award, and first ever RIAI award for Cultural and Public Buildings.
The public choice award solidifies the IRE as Ireland’s favourite building or public space of 2023. Its second win, the RIAI award for Cultural and Public buildings recognises its importance as a civic building in Limerick, as voted by the judges.
The six-storey, fully interactive Experience launched last month and is inspired by World Rugby’s values of Passion, Discipline, Integrity, Solidarity and Respect. Visitors hear the stories, feel the passion and test their skills as they move through six, awe-inspiring stages inside the state-of-the-art building.
With unrivalled views of Limerick, the sixth floor Legends Gallery is a jaw-dropping end to this unique, immersive Experience.
Speaking of the double award-win, Níall McLaughlin Architects (NMLA) commented:
“I’m delighted that the public have chosen the International Rugby Experience Building and that the judges have recognised the IRE as an important building for the public. It is a collaboration between many people. On behalf of the team here at Níall McLaughlin Architects, and the broader team of consultants, craftsmen and builders, I would like to say how proud we are to have been part of this project for the city of Limerick. The themes celebrated in the exhibition are about passion, integrity and respect. This is what we witnessed from the many people who gave their best to this unique endeavour. Thank you to everyone who took part in the voting process and to the esteemed judges. Its lovely to see architecture being celebrated as part of civic life.”
The IRE was one of 53 projects nationwide and the only Limerick-based entry in the public vote, which was announced as the winner yesterday, 22nd June, by RIAI President, Charlotte Sheridan. She said:
“We are thrilled to announce International Rugby Experience has been chosen as Ireland’s favourite building. The shortlist for this year’s Public Choice Award has some incredible buildings that demonstrated the highest level of architecture. It is clear from the level of entries that Irish architects are amongst the best in the world, supporting not just design but Ireland’s economic, cultural and social structure. I would like to congratulate our winner, our runners up and the entire shortlist on their superb entries.”
IRE CEO, Barry Hannon, said the whole city should be proud of the awards.
“We’re delighted to be named the nation’s favourite building. This amazing cathedral to rugby wouldn’t be here without the hard work and expertise of Níall McLaughlin Architects and everyone who was involved in the building process. The building breathes new life into the city and it’s fantastic to see it being recognised with such prestigious awards. A huge thanks also to the record number of people who voted.”
