The David Gedge-fronted Leeds outfit The Wedding Present have been at the forefront of British indie rock since the mid-80s.
Their early singles and acclaimed 1987 debut George Best served as effective introductions to Gedge’s evocative song titles, heartsick lyrics and frantic melodies, while also making a firm fan out of DJ John Peel. It was 1991’s momentous Seamonsters that cemented the band’s place in indie rock history. Recorded with legendary producer Steve Albini, the intense, menacing album was as imposing as it was memorable, adding a brooding muscularity to Gedge’s darkest and most immediate songs to date.
