University Hospital Limerick is the Model 4 hospital for the region. It is where all critical care services are located in addition to a 24/7/365 Emergency Department and it is a designated cancer centre.
University Hospital Limerick (UHL) is the Model 4 hospital for the region. It is where all critical care services are located in addition to a 24/7/365 Emergency Department and it is a designated cancer centre.
Emergency and complex surgeries are only undertaken at UHL. The hospital is the hub for the three Model 2 hospitals, Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital and St John’s Hospital which manage the majority of their local population through their medical assessment units and inpatient beds.
Patients who require access to critical and complex care are seen at University Hospital Limerick and either stabilised and transferred to a local Model 2 hospital or admitted to UHL if required.
In addition, regional in-patient services are provided for a range of specialities such as Paediatrics, E.N.T, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Oncology, including Radiotherapy, Haematology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Support services include Radiology, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Social Work and Pharmacy.
Day care is provided in the surgical specialities and an Acute Medical Assessment Unit is in place at the hospital to treat medical patients without the need to admit them to hospital. A full range of out-patient services is provided in each of the above specialities. In addition, out-patient clinics are also provided in Neurology, Sexuallly Transmitted Diseases/GUM and Orthodontics.
University Hospital Limerick has 80 Obstetric beds and 19 Neo Natal cots. It is the only maternity hospital in the Mid-Western area and is categorised as a level three unit capable of providing clinical services to high risk women and their infants.
Visiting is not permitted outside of visiting times. Children under 14 years are not permitted to visit the hospital. Children over 14 years must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
