July 21st was one fine day as it saw the reveal of a new picnic basket service in Lough Gur and the launch of the 2015 Storytelling Festival.
Visitors to Lough Gur can now pre-order their beautifully prepared picnic basket with fine foods, drinks, cutlery and even a soft blanket ready for you when you call. Expertly prepared by the Old Bakehouse in Bruff there will be no reason to abandon your picnic plans again.
There are three baskets to choose from, the modest Bresnan's Basket, the filling Tír Na Nóg Basket or the decadent Earl's Basket. Kim and Kanya West ordered such a basket from the Old Bakehouse when they honeymooned in the area last year. A wise choice by them. Fear not - you do not need pockets so deep, this is a treat that everyone can enjoy.
Directly after this reveal guests were greeted by Trish Williams, local storyteller and tour guide. This performance took place to kick off the plans for the 2015 Storytelling Festival. In association with Limerick's Capital of Culture 2020 bid, Lough Gur Heritage Centre put on a rich display of various styles and types of Storytellers through poetry, song, drama and music, performed by local people. The area is rich in ancient folklore, history and archaeology & lives on in the culture of the Lough Gur people.
The author and Seanachaí John Carew was the mythological MC for the event that took place on the morning of July 21st. A former winner of the primary school storytelling competition, 11 year old Aishling O' Dea from Kilteely stole the show after her confident and mesmerising account of an encounter with the fairies.
Acclaimed visual artist Mark Dion attended and was visibly moved and captivated while listening to the story of Gearóid Iarla who rises from the lake in Lough Gur every seven year. Mark commented that "Lough Gur was truly inspiring, you may not need to wait for long to see the inspiration appear in my own work"
