Africa Day is a celebration of culture, food and community. Africa Day in Limerick has grown from strength to strength since it was first introduced 14 years ago, and this year organisers hope it will be the best yet.
Events begin on Monday 20 May at 11.30am with the official opening ceremony hosted by Limerick City and County Council at its Corporate Headquarters at Merchant’s Quay, Limerick, with the week’s events launched by Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr. James Collins.
Tuesday 22 May, sees a presentation being delivered by Jules Olivier, Chairperson of the African Irish Association, to Transition Year Students of CBS Sexton Street on African History, Culture, Arts and Music.
As part of the same presentation, an exhibition of African drumming will also be delivered by Mr. David Idioh, Musical Director of the Limerick Gospel Choir.
Thursday 23 May is a date to be savoured as the Tastes and Sounds of Africa is hosted at Narrative 4, 58 O’Connell Street, Limerick. Food, music and dance from a number of African countries showcasing Africa’s diversity will take place from 4pm to 6pm.
The Market’s Field will be the venue on Saturday 25 May for the Limerick Intercultural Soccer Competition. Teams representing the African communities in Limerick and Dublin, along with teams from An Garda Siochana and Limerick City and County Council will participate in the competition with kick off at 1pm.
The highlight of Africa Day celebrations will take place on Sunday 26 May with the annual Family Fun Day at Limerick Milk Market. Proceedings get under way at 1pm and there will be a number of performances including Limerick Gospel Choir, African Praise Team, Brightraay and David Idioh, along with a host of others. The event will draw to a close following an inclusive drumming performance.
