Limerick takes rugby seriously. From its middle-class beginnings in the 1800’s through to the professional era of today, Limerick has fiercely embraced the sport in the most democratic and universal way. While other Irish rugby strongholds have remained decidedly elite, the term “from the Docker to the Doctor”, was coined to describe the uptake of rugby across diverse communities in Limerick.

Limerick is now home to some of Ireland’s best club rugby, the mighty Munster Rugby team, the hallowed grounds of Thomond Park Stadium and of course the not-to-be missed International Rugby Experience.

From September to June, rugby fans flock to the city to attend matches and soak up the buzz of the ‘Home of Munster Rugby’. But what do you do to get your rugby fix during the off-season? We have some suggestions to help you forget that you’re not actually at a game!

International Rugby Experience

Try-out a fully immersive, interactive experience designed to engage and inspire. Split into six zones, it takes you on a journey from the grass roots of rugby right up to legendary status – with each stage rooted in World Rugby’s values of Passion, Discipline, Integrity, Solidarity and Respect. Whether you’re ruck-ing up with the kids for a fun day out or you’re a die-hard rugby fan looking to deep dive into the detail, this is a real must-see for all fans of the game! Discover more.

Thomond Park Museum and Stadium Tours

Follow in the footsteps of Munster Rugby legends, by taking a glimpse behind the scenes at the fortress that is Thomond Park Stadium. The stadium tour takes you to places usually only accessible to players and officials. From a seat in the home dressing room to a walk down the tunnel, the tour gives a unique perspective on how Munster players feel on big match days. Discover more.

Limerick’s Rugby Pubs

Although the match might not be live on the big screen, it’s safe to say, the walls will be heaving with rugby memorabilia from framed jerseys to team photos and more. Tackle a good pint, some good food and soak up the atmosphere. Plus, you’re almost guaranteed to find someone as keen as you are to engage in some top-notch rugby commentary! That’s a win-win in our books. Discover more.

Pig ‘n’ Porter

Pig N Porter Festival

An annual summer favourite in Limerick, the Pig ‘n’ Porter tag rugby tournament is back with a bang for 2024. With a reputation across the world for great tag rugby and an even better party, it is a festival not to be missed, both on and off the pitch. Discover more.

Sporting Statues

While you’re here, make sure to check out the ‘Ruck and Puck’ bronze statue, which pays tribute to Limerick’s sporting prowess in hurling and rugby and stands proudly against the towering backdrop of the International Rugby Experience on O’Connell Street.

Located close to Thomond Park at Clancy Strand and carved from local limestone, is a touching memorial to Munster Rugby’s legendary forward, Anthony Foley. The two-metre tall memorial stone features Anthony or Axel, as he was affectionately known, charging with ball in hand.
