Limerick has given its name to the most famous type of poem in the English language, the little five-line witty limerick. As part of Limerick City of Culture 2014, Limerick Archives decided to put together this beginner's guide to the limerick. In this publication, the reader could discover the rules of writing a limerick; read about the link between the poem and the place, Limerick and the limerick; and find out about the Maigue Poets of Croom who made the limerick their own.

One of the main sections of this project was that the students of Limerick's primary schools could send in their own entries to Limerick Archives, and their limericks would be published in the book. Mayor Michael Sheehan awarded some of these students on the night of the launch of the book in March 2015.
