St. Mary’s AID Community Heritage Talks continues a lively and informative series of talks celebrating the life and lore of St. Mary's Parish on Friday November 23rd with a talk on The Alms Houses in St. Mary’s Parish.
The talks of 40 minutes duration are held once a month on the third Friday of each month at 1pm in the Boardroom of St. Marys AID Widows Alms Houses Nicholas Street Limerick.
This month the talk will cover aspects of local history and folklore on The Alms Houses in St. Mary’s Parish on November 23rd. The December talk on Friday 14th December will look at St. Mary’s Literary Traditions.
The Alms Houses in St Mary’s Parish will look at the three groups of Alms Houses that flourished in the area. These are the Jeremy Hall Alms Houses which no longer exist but were the first communal Alms houses in the area, and also the Villiers Alms Houses and the Corporation Alms Houses, now the Widows Alms Houses in Nicholas Street, both of which are still in existence and operational.
The talk will be accompanied by a slide show with antique photos and musical interludes and will be given by John O’Regan of St Marys AID. John is a noted broadcaster, journalist and lecturer and has spoken at events including The Milwaukee Irish Festival, Return to Camden Town Festival in London and the Copenhagen Irish Festival among other events. A frequent broadcaster on local radio he currently appears on Limerick City Community Radio and has previously broadcast on RTE Radio One, FM 104, BBC Radio Four and BBC Radio Merseyside.
The Alms Houses in St. Mary’s Parish will be given on Friday November 23rd at 1pm. Tea and scones will be provided and tickets cost €5 will be available from St. Mary’s AID reception on Nicholas Street. Phone bookings can be made to O61 318106 and tickets on the door will be available on the day.
