Opened in 1916, Limerick Museum is one of the oldest and largest local authority museums in the country with a diverse collection consisting of some 65,000 objects.
Limerick Museum is dedicated to the memory of Jim Kemmy, the former Democratic Socialist Party and Labour Party TD for Limerick East and two-time Mayor of Limerick. The curator is Dr Matthew Potter. The assistant curator is Dr Zara Power.
Limerick Museum engages in a wide variety of community outreach, from temporary exhibitions to pop-up events to school workshops.
The story of the city and county is presented through a rich collection of artefacts, from Stone Age axes to medieval coins, to the civic sword of Queen Elizabeth I to a large collection of Limerick lace and silver. The more unusual items include, Ireton’s Cat, a mummified cat found on Nicholas Street in the 1890’s, a fragment of the largest meteorite that ever fell in Ireland in 1813 and a 1940s diving suit.
