The town of Askeaton boasts a very active swimming club which was founded in 1959. United by a love of the water, the club has members of all ages who compete regularly, both regionally and nationally.
Coral Leisure Centre community health and leisure facility caters for everyone from 1 to 100. With a state of the art gym, pool and personal training services, its the perfect place for the whole family to stay fit and healthy while having great fun.
For those who prefer the outdoors the Deel River, which is tidal, flows into the south side of the Shannon Estuary at Askeaton, and is a favourite brown trout fishing spot.
Hidden away off the main N69 Limerick to Foynes road, 12km from Askeaton, is the beautiful 55 acre spring water Bleach Lough. Home to Bleach Lough Anglers and open to members and non-members alike. The lake is frequently stocked with Rainbow and Brown Trout and catches of Trout up to 10lbs are common. Other natural species in the lake are Perch, Rudd, Roach and Pike. Main activities on the lake are Trout Fishing (mostly fly fishing and spinning) or coarse fishing.
The nearby Aughinish Alumina Nature Trail is certainly worth a visit! A self-guided nature trail through wild countryside along the south bank of the Shannon Estuary which has a bird hide, Ireland’s first designated sanctuary for butterflies, meadlowland and a rare heath habitat. Close to Askeaton, it is equally fascinating in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
The Limerick Greenway, a former railway line which stretches for 40km from Rathkeale to beyond Abbeyfeale, can be accessed at a number of points along the way and is free-of-charge to use. Visitors to Askeaton can access the Greenway at nearby Rathkeale (10.5km).
Askeaton Touring Club is a fundraising cycle club which holds annual fund raising events with the aim of changing the lives of those less fortunate.
Askeaton is also home to an abundance of thriving sports and special interest organisations - Askeaton GAA, Askeaton AFC, Askeaton/Ballysteen Tennis Club and Desmond Rowing Club.
Desmond Rowing Club are located at the very picturesque Deel River in County Limerick. The club introduces young people to rowing, gets them to know the basic skills of rowing before moving onto rowing clubs like St. Michaels.
