Uisce Éireann & Wastewater

Uisce Éireann is Ireland’s new national water utility that is responsible for providing and developing water services throughout Ireland.

Incorporated in July 2013 as a semi-state company under the Water Services Act 2013, Uisce Éireann brings the water and wastewater services of the 34 local authorities together under one national service provider.

Uisce Éireann has taken over the responsibilities from these local authorities since January 2014. Uisce Éireann is now responsible for the operation of public water & wastewater services, including management of national water & wastewater assets, maintenance of the water / wastewater system, investment and planning, managing capital projects and customer care and billing.

As well as responsibility for these public services, Uisce Éireann will also be making capital and investment decisions regarding the country’s infrastructure on a national basis.

Uisce Éireann is accountable to two regulatory bodies – the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), who is the economic regulator for the water industry, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who is the environmental regulator.
