Limerick City and County Council in conjunction with the JP McManus Charitable Foundation has decided to proceed with Limerick Going for Gold 2024.
Limerick City and County Council now invites applications for the Limerick Going for Gold Environmental Improvement Grant & Competition 2024. This grant scheme aims to assist with Sustainable Environmental Improvement works undertaken by non-profit making organisations working within Limerick City and County administrative area.
Grant assistance is being provided for the project/works as outlined in application form. In order to comply with the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the following are the conditions for 2024:
- These funds should not be used for the purchase of weed killer or bedding plants
- Please take the valuable advice from previous Tidy Town's seminarsTidy Towns Supports & Useful Links | Limerick.ie
- Please do not place planters on grass/green areas. Trees and other plants should be planted directly into the ground
- The All Ireland Pollinator Plan has advised encouraging natural wild seed banks to grow rather than planting wildflower seed. Please note, native wildflowers grow better on poorer soils and topsoil is not required. Practical advice on managing wildflower meadows – National Biodiversity Data Centre (biodiversityireland.ie)
- Wildflower seed packs from supermarkets etc should be kept for use in private gardens.
- If planting grass seeds, please ensure a higher percentage of clovers and daisies, which will benefit wildlife.
- If there are residents in your area with homemade compost, please check if they can supply it to the project as an alternative to moss peat
- If you are planting Hydrangeas, please ensure they are a variety that attract pollinators www.pollinators.ie and AIPP-A5-Community-guidelines-2023-WEB.pdf (pollinators.ie)
- This grant should not be used for artificial grass or plants
If your grant application relates to planting – consider adding value to your grant by planting perennials and using planting schemes of trees and flowers that are good for biodiversity.
