Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is encouraging people to participate, saying, “A thriving tourism economy and ecosystem is a strong indicator of a good quality of life and more liveable and healthier Limerick. It is essential for Limerick to be vibrant, dynamic and safe, a desirable place to visit, explore and stay instead of traveling through to reach another destination. By listening to our communities, we can create a strategy that reflects the true needs and desires of all. This survey provides a very important opportunity for anyone with an interest in our city and county to have their say and to share their insights and experience”.
Senior Executive Officer for Tourism, Festivals & Events at Limerick City and County Council, Eileen Coleman commented, “Limerick City and County Council is committed to enhancing the tourism offering in Limerick for all communities. Working together, we can add to what Limerick currently offers and transform our county into a dynamic destination that has something for everyone, making Limerick a top location of choice for tourists. I encourage everyone to participate in our survey and help shape the future of Limerick”.
Scope of the new Tourism Strategy
The new Tourism Strategy will strive to encompass all policies, strategies, brands, attractions and activities that fall under the remit of LCCC and plug the gaps that currently exist in our offering. This includes, but is not limited to:

- Evolution of the brand of Limerick.
- Georgian Limerick
- Discover Limerick DAC.
- Food Offering & Restaurants
- Festivals and Events Unit – Riverfest, St Patrick’s Festival, Christmas in Limerick, Halloween in Limerick, Culture Night and more.
- Destination Experience Development Plan (DEDP) being commenced by ‘Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands’ in the next few months. LCCC will be on this steering group committee.
- Key Challenges
- Limerick’s Music Industry
- Sporting Facilities
- Our current and intended attractions like Limerick Greenway, Lough Gur, International Rugby Experience, Game Cube and medieval heritage in Kilmallock, Askeaton and Mungret.
- Key Opportunities – Temperate climate, regional brands, increased overseas capacity, Ryder Cup 2027.
- Guiding Principles – Great place to live; sustainability; climate action; collaboration; innovation; new technologies.
Our goal is to broaden the current tourism offering that Limerick has. We want heritage assets and amenities to work better for locals and visitors. We acknowledge that we need to maintain and improve what we currently offer. This fosters a secure and inviting atmosphere making Limerick an attractive destination for all.
Purpose of the Survey
The purpose of this survey is to understand the tourism offering from the viewpoint of residents and the broader community.
We aim to understand the experiences of those who engage with Limerick’s current tourism offering and those who do not. This will help to determine what enhancements can be made to make Limerick’s tourism offering more inclusive and enticing.
Survey Participation and Incentive
The survey is open until 12:00 noon on Monday 30th September 2024. As an added incentive, survey participants who wish to be included will be entered into a draw to win a €200, €100 or €50 One4all Gift Card.
Deadline Extended to 9pm on Friday 4th October 2024.
