A new walking map has been launched by Limerick City and County Council to encourage locals and visitors to step out this spring and explore the city centre on the Limerick City Loop Walk.
An initiative of Limerick City and County Council’s Marketing and Communications Department, the map showcases the popular Slí na Sláinte route, and features 18 points of interest to discover along the way.
Slí na Sláinte, meaning ‘path to health’, is a measured Irish Heart Foundation walking route in the heart of the community. Each route is signposted at 1 km intervals and is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Starting and ending at the junction of Bedford Row and O’Connell Street, the 3.8 km Limerick City Loop Walk extends along Limerick’s main thoroughfare O’Connell Street, ambles through the leafy Georgian Quarter and continues along O’Connell Avenue before looping back to the heart of the city centre via the South Circular Road.
The map serves as your compass to uncover 18 points of interest, with information on sinking churches, Turkish baths and the 1930’s Limerick Grand Prix race “Round the Houses.” Each landmark provides a narrative on Limerick’s rich history and culture, ensuring an engaging stroll for those looking to explore.
The Limerick City Loop Map has been created as part of the four week multimedia Limerick on Foot campaign, launched this week, inspiring people to get out walking, running and hiking along some of Limerick’s most scenic and popular routes. The campaign will run until the beginning of March, and features dedicated social and video content, a new print and digital guide and a comprehensive Limerick on Foot hub on Limerick.ie - an excellent resource for those striving to meet their health and fitness goals for 2024.
The handy Limerick City Loop Walk downloadable guide is an excellent companion to the Three Bridges Walk map launched in 2023.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell is inviting people to explore:
“I want to congratulate the Marketing and Communications team for continuing to inspire us all with ways to get more active while also providing the tools to learn more about our great city and county. This new map is a fantastic addition to the Limerick on Foot campaign resources. Whether you are planning a family day out, looking for a regular walking or running route or just out to explore, make the Limerick on Foot hub your first stop.”
Limerick on Foot won the Health and Wellbeing Award at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2023.
Head of Marketing and Communications at Limerick City and County Council, Donn O’Sullivan says they are building on success:
“The Limerick on Foot campaign has been a brilliant success and we hope it encourages even more people to embrace a healthier more active lifestyle this year. The new Limerick City Loop Map is an invitation to the people of Limerick, and to visitors, to step out and discover Limerick’s vibrant urban landscape. From historic landmarks and scenic routes to often overlooked gems, this is your guide to the heart of the city.”
