Limerick welcomes the annual access awareness day which is #MakeWayDay21.
Tomorrow, 24 September sees the return of the Make Way Day campaign where access issues are highlighted in Limerick and across the country.
The 'Make Way Day' campaign is led by the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) and its aim is to highlight the challenges faced by people with disabilities in the public spaces we all share.
This year with the ongoing Covid pandemic, the Make Way Day campaign has been adapted through the design of an online tool by the Disability Federation of Ireland.
Participants will be invited to undertake a survey of their 5K journey in their locality with an online easy-to-use tool at www.makewayday.com.
This enables users to survey their area on their 5K journey for obstacles and rate the level of accessibility. The aim is to have all neighbourhoods join up, to give one comprehensive map of access issues across Ireland. The tool is mobile-friendly and is used to draw attention to anything that represents an access problem. This quick and easy exercise is mainly picture-based, and people can use it as often as they like tomorrow.
Mayor of Limerick city and county, Cllr Daniel Butler, said he fully supports Make Way Day 2021.
“I’m delighted to be involved to promote this campaign at a local level. You don’t have to have a disability to use the online tool as the whole point of Make Way Day is to bring attention to barriers on the footpaths that can cause people with disabilities so many problems. I would encourage everyone to take part in this important initiative to continue to address any accessibility issues throughout Limerick.”
The hashtag #MakeWayDay21 is being used tomorrow, Friday 24 September to raise the issues in the public domain.
