The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Sheahan is commending all those involved in Tidy Towns groups across Limerick for their amazing efforts over the past 12 months. Mayor Sheahan was speaking following the announcement of the Tidy Towns winners for 2019, which saw Glaslough, Co. Monaghan (346 marks) named as overall National SuperValu TidyTowns Winners.

Mayor Michael Sheahan said: “I want to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of the volunteer groups across the city and county for their work to their communities and their ongoing commitment to helping make their localities a better place to live.”

“Fifty-six groups from right across Limerick took part in this year’s competition, with some returning following an absence last year. I was delighted but not surprised to see that all groups who competed last year saw an increase in their marks this year. That is down to the commitment of community groups and volunteers who give up their time to help out.”

Adare was once again named as Limerick’s Tidiest Town with 335 marks, closely followed by Galbally (332 marks) and Ardpatrick (331 marks).

Adare was awarded a Silver Medal, with Bronze Medals going to Ardpatrick, Galbally, Castleconnell, Newcastle West, and Limerick City.

This year’s Endeavour Award for Limerick went to Ballyagran, which saw the biggest percentage improvement on marks compared to last year.

Each of the groups saw their marks increase on last year.

Sinead McDonnell, Environment Awareness Officer with Limerick City and County Council said: “The results for Limerick are very encouraging and are a result of the hard work and dedication that communities across Limerick put in every day of the year to make their areas better. It is a particularly pleasing that all entrants saw their marks increase compared to last year.”

“The final of the Going For Gold competition, backed by the JP McManus Charitable Foundation, is next week (08 Oct), so there will be even more celebrations for communities across Limerick.”
