In celebration of National Tree Week, Limerick City and County Council announces its ambitious plan to plant 2000 trees this year with the help of Limerick communities, as part of its overall planting programme.

The theme for National Tree Week, "Planting Trees, Growing Together," emphasises community involvement and collaboration. The Council is inviting communities to contact their local elected representative to suggest suitable greens for tree planting.

To mark National Tree Week, Mayor of Limerick, John Moran planted a Bee Tree in Limerick’s People’s Park to replace a mature tree felled during Storm Darwin in 2014. The Bee Tree is an exotic pollinator species that is rare to Ireland.

Supporting the tree planting initiative, the Mayor said:

"Trees are vital to our environment and community. By investing in this initiative, we are not only enhancing the beauty of our environs but also contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future. I encourage everyone to get involved and help us decide where these trees should be planted."

Trees will be planted on local greens on a first come first served basis. Tree planting is already underway and/or planned at the following locations:

  • Castletroy Urban Greenway
  • Mulcair Road
  • Greaney Close, Dooradoyle
  • Canon Breen Park, Thomondgate
  • Janesboro Park
  • City and County Parks

Príomh Comhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney highlighted the importance of community participation, saying:

"This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for residents to have a direct impact on their local environment. By working together, we can create greener spaces that benefit everyone."

Senior Executive Engineer, Environment and Climate Action at Limerick City and County Council, Carmel Lynch commented:

"We are excited to see the positive impact these initiatives will have on our community. Trees provide numerous benefits, from improving air quality to enhancing biodiversity. We look forward to seeing the community come together to support this effort."
